Special measures for showdown

By David Watters

East Thurrock United are taking special measures to cope with the army of Dulwich Hamlet fans expected to descend on Rookery Hill for Bank Holiday Monday’s Ryman Premier promotion play-off final.

The Rocks announced on Sunday that they are opening additional entry points to the ground and also issuing wrist bands so fans who arrive early can gain quick and easy access to and from their bar and hospitality areas before the 3pm kick off.

Apart from their two FA Cup First Round appearances, the Rocks are calling Monday’s promotion clash in Essex the “biggest game” in their history and are taking the special measures to cope with what is likely to be one of their biggest gates in years.

A Rocks spokesman said: “Not withstanding a couple of FA Cup First Round proper ties, this is probably the biggest match in our history.

“We do hope fans will make every effort to visit Rookery Hill on Bank Holiday Monday to show their support with the reward for the winning finalist of promotion into the National League South.”

The turnstiles at Rookery Hill open at 1.30pm with tickets prices at £10 for adults, £5 concessions and £2 for U16s. Season tickets or passes are not valid for the end of season showdown.

After their third place finish to the Ryman Premier season, John Coventry’s side booked their berth in the final when they beat Tonbridge 2-0 at Rookery Hill on Thursday night. Gavin Rose and his Hamlet side beat runners-up Bognor Regis Town 1-0 in their semi on the same night at Nyewood Lane.

Despite the 10 points gap between the hosts who finished in third spot and fifth placed Hamlet, the clubs head into the game relatively evenly matched after failing to again advantage in the regular league this season having drawn both their league fixtures 2-2. On the goal difference front, Thurrock the campaign on plus 54 with the visitors posting 35.

As Dulwich were breaking Bognor hearts in Sussex with a trademark Ashley Carew free kick late on, the Ryman League's other 'Rocks' were booking their place in the final with a third win of the season over Steve McKimm’s Tonbridge Angels thanks to goals from Rickie Hayles and Ben Marlow.

Unfortunately, their celebrations were marred by the news that Kye Ruel, stretchered off in the last quarter hour, had suffered a broken leg.

A spokesman added: "Unfortunately during last night's semi-final match, Kye has suffered a broken leg. Everyone at the club wishes Kye a speedy recovery."
