Stars wanted for final trials

By David Watters

Fulham are inviting ambitious young players from around the Ryman League to trial for a place among the next intake of students joining their elite football and education programme.

The final trials for September's intake into the Fulham Foundation Football and Education Programme are taking place from 11am to 2pm on Tuesday 19 July at Coulsdon Sixth Form College in Placehouse Lane, Old Coulsdon.

Aimed at students aged 16-18, the Championship club's programme provides academic support for pupils working towards A-Level and BTEC qualifications while training on a daily basis like professional footballers. Successful candidates will compete in the FA Youth Cup, Conference Youth Alliance League, Southern Youth Floodlit League and the National U19 Youth Football Development League.

Trials for 2016-17 academic year have been taking place at venues in Beckenham, Lewisham and Croydon and a spokesman hailed the success of their most recent graduates.

He said: "The programme is crucial in helping pupils achieve their college scholarship, semi-professional and professional football aspirations. Last season 100 per cent of participants achieved a positive exit route; moving on to university, work, or apprenticeships.

"Highlights included two participants receiving scholarships to American universities, one signing to a professional academy as a scholar, and one signing a two-year professional contract."
