Striker confirmed as new manager

Soham Town Rangers have named senior striker Robbie Mason as the new man to guide them in Ryman North.

The 30-year-old, pictured, was confirmed as the club's new player-manager on Sunday, two weeks after the departure of former joint bosses Robbie Nightingale and David Theobald at the start of December to take over at Southern League Cambridge City.

Mason, who returned to Julius Martin Lane for his third spell with the Greens at the beginning of the season from Royston Town, had been in interim charge alongside Will Lawton and will be assisted by Lloyd Groves, who arrived over the summer from Godmanchester Rovers. After the recent departures of six players to follow Nightingale and Theobald to Cambridge City, Green officials say their first priority will be to start strengthening their squad.

Mason is looking forward to taking up his first managerial post despite the urgent challenge the pair face ahead of their first game at the helm, Bury Town at home on Boxing Day.

He said: “I would like to thank the club for giving us the opportunity. I couldn't think of a better place to start my managerial career. I would also like to thank the players for being so supportive.”

A Greens spokesman said: "Soham Town Rangers are pleased to announce Robbie Mason as their new first team player-manager. Although the club received many applications for the post, it was felt that Robbie would provide the continuity at this difficult time as he obviously knows the strengths of the current squad."

He added: "The club would like to wish Robbie and Lloyd well in their new roles, which start at home to Bury Town on Boxing Day."
