Tuesday's Ryman Premier action review

Ryman League Premier Division

Canvey Island, Thamesmead Town and Carshalton Athletic have yet to record a point after Tuesday night's round of matches in the Ryman Premier Division, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The Islanders were beaten 2-1 at Cray Wanderers, whose Leigh Bremner opened the scoring after three minutes when he gained the ball deep on the right, cut inside and refused to be dispossessed before walloping a marvellous cross-shot high into the far corner of the net.

Bremner then set up a second goal with a similar solo run of great strength from the right flank in the 35th minute. This time he finished with a low cross that Chris Saunders dispatched into the net via the leg of the unfortunate Jay Curran. The visitors pulled back a goal just before half-time when a fierce shot from Sheldon Sellars was pushed out by Andy Walker but was instantly drilled back into the net by Jay Nash.

After Saturday's second half shocker at Leiston there was concern amongst Cray supporters when Canvey started to overrun the Wands after the interval. But Cray weathered the storm and gradually began to play the ball out of their half, create threats on goal and in the end hold out comfortably for a first three-point haul.

Promoted Thamesmead conceded four at home on the opening day and then another five at Lowestoft Town on Tuesday. In front of a crowd of 520, Lee Smith gave the Trawlerboys a seventh minute lead that Rob Eagle doubled on 26 minutes. Four minutes later and Mead conceded a third, Smith on the mark again. Henderson added a fourth just three minutes later. The second half saw just one more goal added, Henderson grabbing his second of the game six minutes from time.

Maidstone United, who came up from Ryman South, are unbeaten after condemning Carshalton Athletic to a second successive defeat, this time a 2-1 reverse at Colston Avenue. Frannie Collin gave the Stones a 27th minute lead that Luke Pigden cancelled out 10 minutes later. It looked as though the Robins were going to hold on for a point until Alex Brown popped up with Maidstone's winner three minutes from the end.

East Thurrock United, Bury Town and Lewes are also unbeaten after the opening two games.

The Rocks won 1-0 at relegated Billericay Town, Nathan Koranteng netting the only goal on 12 minutes while Bury edged out Harrow Borough by the odd goal in five at Ram Meadow.

Adam Bailey-Dennis gave the Blues a 9th minute lead that Shaun Lucien levelled from the spot for Dave Anderson`s side. But John Sands bagged a brace either side of halt-time to give Bury a 3-1 lead that Lucien reduced on 65 minutes.

Lewes had to be content with a draw at the Dripping Pan against fancied Hampton & Richmond Borough, for whom this was a first point of the new campaign. Charlie Moone gave the Beavers an 18th minute lead that Fraser Logan equalised five minutes after the restart.

Relegated AFC Hornchurch and Metropolitan Police are up and running with respective first victories.

The Urchins beat Margate 2-1 at Hartsdown Park, courtesy of goals from Carl Rook from the spot after 27 minutes and Ade Yusuf in stoppage time after John Beales had equalised just past the hour-mark.

The Met saw off Wingate & Finchley 3-1 at Imber Court, with Tobi Alabi bagging a brace on 20 and 45 minutes. Marc Weatherstone sandwiched an equaliser for the visitors on 39 minutes but David Knight made sure with a third in the last minute of the match.
