Two double up for Grays

By Peter Butcher

TWO goals apiece by Junior Baker and Jeff Hammond saw Grays to a 4-2 home derby win over Tilbury tonight (Tuesday), lifting them to within three points of Ryman North leaders Maldon with three games in hand.

Popular defender Baker put Grays ahead six minutes before half-time only for Tony Jacobs to reply before the break. Baker did it again after 56 minutes but once again Dockers hit back with a 71st-minute penalty by Aaron Waters after keeper Lamar Johnson brought down Jack Carlile.

Hammond’s deflected shot from a tight angle put Grays ahead to stay in the 77th minute and he struck again with a near-post header two minutes later.

Heybridge moved up to fourth place with a 2-1 home win over Potters Bar. Luke Callander, the league’s top scorer, needed less than a minute to net his 27th of the season and veteran defender Chris Moore added another before the interval. Josh Hutchinson’s reply seven minutes from the end gave the hosts a scare, but no more than that.
