Vines denies Trawlerboys

By Peter Butcher

FOR A brief moment tonight (Wednesday) Lowestoft thought they had moved into the Ryman Premier play-off places.

After 79 minutes of stalemate at Cray, a foul on Chris Henderson, who had earlier hit a post, allowed Dale Cockrill to give the Trawlerboys the lead from the penalty spot.

A victory would have lifted them to fifth in the table, but their delight lasted only a minute before Joe Vines made it 1-1 and Lowestoft remain in eighth spot with Cray one place behind them.

FA Cup heroes Hastings turned their attentions to the League Cup and advanced to the quarter-finals with a 3-2 victory along the Sussex coast at Worthing.

If Rebels hoped that their visitors would be distracted by all the excitement surrounding their forthcoming replay against Harrogate in the national competition and the potential third-round clash with Middlesbrough, they were taught a lesson after only three minutes when Dee Okojie put Hastings ahead.

Bailo Camara made it 2-0 on the half-hour and, although Luke Gedling pulled one back in the 65th minute as Worthing rallied strongly, Hastings made sure of their quarter-final place when Bradley Goldberg, who has six FA Cup goals to his credit this season, stretched their lead again with seven minutes left.

Chris O’Flaherty maintained his current goalscoring form with a second for Worthing in the 90th minute but it was too late to avert a 3-2 defeat.
