James Alexander Gordon, the voice of classified football results for 40 years on BBC radio, has died aged 78.

Gordon, pictured, started reading the classified results in 1973 and retired in 2013 following throat surgery after he was diagnosed with cancer. His passing was announced by the BBC on Monday.

One of the most recognisable voices in British broadcasting with his distinctive Scottish accent and unique style, he attracted an army of followers reading the classified football results before he was replaced by Radio 4 newsreader Charlotte Green following his retirement.

Born in Edinburgh in 1936, Gordon contracted polio when he was six months old and spent much of his childhood in hospital. He lived in Berkshire and is survived by his wife Julia, son David and two grandchildren.
