We're no heroes, insist striking duo

Great Wakering Rovers strikers Jay Nash and Jacob Cleaver are insisting they aren't heroes despite springing into action to help a stricken opponent during their Ryman North clash with Phoenix Sports.

When Phoenix defender Steve Springett was knocked out cold during last Saturday's 3-3 draw after an accidental collision, the first aid trained duo rushed to his aid to quickly get him into the recovery position and check his air passageways were clear before physios arrived on the scene.

In an interview with www.echo-news.co.uk, Nash said the pair were just doing what came naturally during the second half incident at the Phoenix Sports Ground.

The 23-year-old said: “Jacob and I just wanted to help. My job means I have to know a bit of first aid and am aware of these things and luckily it came in useful.

“I saw he was knocked out straight away so we waved the physios on but I didn’t just want to leave him lying there. I put him in the recovery position with Jacob and it was only because of a video online that I knew what to do really.

“I couldn’t see his tongue but I did manage to pull it out of his mouth and just kept talking to him and asked him to keep responding so I could see his tongue.

"We saw Steve in the clubhouse afterwards and he was doing OK, so I am just glad we were able to help.”

Springett, who had scored for Phoenix earlier in the match, was substituted following the second half incident and is reported to be recuperating well this week.
