A big night at both ends

By Ian Townsend

Hanworth Villa and Binfield look to reinforce their play off credentials, whilst Ashford Town hope to jump clear of the bottom four

Just a point for Hanworth Villa as they host Guernsey tonight would see them climb to fourth place in Pitching In Isthmian South Central, but the Villains will be hoping for three, as a win would guarantee a top five finish and the chance of a fabulous finale to their first Step Four season. Whatever happens, it will have been a season to remember! The Green Lions are safe from harm after a difficult campaign that has ended impressively, and they travel with only two defeats from their last ten matches.

Binfield find themselves four points away from the top five with a game in hand. They welcome third place Marlow knowing that a win could well be the only result which will give them a shot of the play offs as they head towards the last day of the campaign- but also aware that their opponents defensive record is only bettered by the top two. Marlow’s motivation is that victory would guarantee them a home Play Off Semi-Final; and we suspect they will also be motivated by the fact that the Noles walloped them four-nil in the FA Trophy, three-nil in the Velocity Cup, and took a point from them in the first league encounter between the two sides- a two-two draw in January.

At the bottom end of the table, already relegated Tooting & Mitcham United welcome a side who are trying very hard not to be relegated, Ashford Town. The Tangerines have been in freefall, taking only two points from their last ten matches, and find themselves fourth from bottom. Their last victory was exactly two months ago, but they will have the motivation that three points tonight will take them out of the bottom four and mean that third bottom Sutton Common Rovers, who they visit on Saturday, can’t catch them. The Terrors are playing only for pride- and share the date of their last win with the Tangerines, February 18th.

Finally, we have a mid table battle as Southall welcome Chipstead. Only one point separates the two sides, the Chips knowing that they would move into the top ten with victory, the All with the best defensive record of anyone outside the top five.
