AB1 Golden Gloves Awards- February 2020

By Ian Townsend

Here are the winners of our February Golden Gloves Awards, sponsored by AB1 Goalkeeping

Another month over, another collection of mean defences to be recognised. Please note, the outcomes are all calculated on statistics, and we’ve limited the winners to clubs who have played a minimum of three league fixtures. So here we go:

Premier Division

We’ve just been to Cray Wanderers to deliver a Manager of the Month Award, and now we’re back. It’s like we never left!

Wands conceded only two goals during the month of February, an average of half a goal a game. Yes, we know you can’t score half a goal, but that’s what happens when you’re relying on maths! Horsham and Worthing were the only sides to find a way past Lewis Carey and his fabulous defence- and neither of them managed to get anything else, as Wands took all of the points on each occasion.

Congrats to Lewis and the stout folk who stand in front of him.

North Division

We’re off down West Street, to the home of those Seed Growers, Coggeshall Town.

Town have had a fabulous February. Four matches resulted in three wins and a draw, two clean sheets, and only three goals conceded- that’s three quarters of a goal a game! Both Ashlee Jones and Jake Jessup shared the goalkeeping duties, so we’ll leave the Seed Growers to decide where the gloves go, but congratulations to both of them, and to their mean defence.

South Central Division

Bracknell Town have had a magnificent February, scoring fourteen goals and charging up the table- but whilst most of the attention goes to their free-scoring attack, we’re going to focus on the other end. The Robins have been underpinned by their miserly back line, which has conceded only ONE goal during this period. We’d congratulate Staines Town for scoring it, if only they hadn’t conceded seven!

Again, two goalkeepers were part of this run. Jason Matthews conceded that one goal against the Swans, and Mark Scott had three clean sheets. We’ll leave it up to the club to decide on the distribution once more! Congratulations to Mark, Jason, and the collection of mean folk in front of them.

South East Division

We’re off to Ashford United again, as the Nuts and Bolts add our goalkeeping prize to their Performance of the Month trophy. Six matches and only four goals conceded gives them victory with only 0.67 goals a game conceded, Chichester City getting three quarters of them last weekend.

With clean sheets against East Grinstead Town, Sittingbourne, Hastings United and Guernsey, congratulations go to the incomparable Sam Mott and his exceptional defence!

Thanks to AB1 Goalkeeping for being our sponsors. You can take a look at their magnificent products- and they don’t just sell gloves- by heading HERE.

Premier League winner and international goalkeeper Asmir Begovic will be best known for his work between the posts, particularly for Stoke City, Chelsea and AFC Bournemouth. But he also has his own company- AB1 Goalkeeping- who provide magnificent products for discerning goalkeepers everywhere- and we are lucky enough to have them as sponsors of our Golden Gloves Award. As they explain:

'AB1 Goalkeeping was the brainchild of one of the Premier League’s leading goalkeepers, Asmir Begovic. With his 15 years’ experience playing at the highest levels of top-flight international football, plus a development team with over 20 years’ experience of developing first-class goalkeeping products, we have a range of equipment to suit all levels of the game, from Grass Roots Football to the Premier League.'
