Another change at the bottom

By Peter Butcher

THE battle to avoid the one relegation place from Ryman North is increasingly fascinating and it took a further twist tonight (Wednesday).

Ilford drew 3-3 at home to Cheshunt to climb off the foot of the table. Ware take over, becoming the third team to occupy the hot seat in 24 hours.

Redbridge were bottom at the start of play yesterday but their victory at Witham dumped Ilford into last place though, as it turned out, just for a day.

Ilford, who won for the first time at home all season last Wednesday, came desperately closer to another success. But a goalmouth scramble in the sixth minute of added time ended with David Greene forcing the ball over the line to level the scores.

The home side fielded their fourth goalkeeper in as many games and Carl Young was picking the ball out of his net after only seven minutes as Corey Whitely finished off a pass from Greene.

George Lutaaya replied in the 12th minute when Cheshunt keeper Obey Murufu failed to gather his gentle shot, but the visitors quickly regained the lead through Leon Archer.

When Harry Sintim made it 2-2 in the 26th minute it was the first time this season that two members of an Ilford starting line-up had found the net.

They had scored twice on only three previous occasions: twice the same player netted both and in the other game one of the goals came from a substitute.

Better was to follow just before half-time when Lutaaya struck again to make it Ilford's first three-goal haul since April, and their first at home since 3 March 2012 when they beat Cheshunt 3-2.

A repeat of that scoreline looked incereasingly likely during the second half as a couple of goalline clearances kept Cheshunt at bay while, at the other end, Ilford substitute Warren Mfula missed two chances, one of them a sitter.

That proved costly when Greene's late strike denied the home side a much-needed victory.

Where next?

Bridges shine, but lose ground YOU have to feel a little sorry for Three Bridges, who pulled off one of the best results in their testing Ryman South debut season yesterday (Saturday) when they drew 1-1 at third-placed Leatherhead.
Orlu steps up for Canvey TWO goals by centre-back Richard Orlu (pictured) lifted Canvey into third place in the Ryman Premier table tonight (Tuesday) with a 2-0 home win over Wealdstone, who drop to fourth.
