Awards for relegated Robins

By Peter Butcher

ALTHOUGH it turned out to be in vain, Carshalton Athletic’s valiant fight to avoid relegation from the Ryman Premier has been doubly recognised in the league’s Macron Awards for April which were announced today (Friday).

The Robins won five of their six games during the month and, although they were still relegated on goal difference, they had the best record of any team in the division and therefore Tommy Williams is the Macron Manager of the Month.

The Team Performance award also goes to Carshalton for their 3-2 victory at Lowestoft Town on April 13, at a time when the Trawlerboys were still very much in the title hunt.

Witham Town boss Garry Kimble takes the manager’s award in Ryman North. Starting the month nine points short of the play-off places, and without any games in hand, his team won seven games in succession before drawing their last match when a play-off place was already assured.

The Macron Team Performance prize goes to Waltham Abbey for their remarkable 5-3 victory at champions Grays Athletic on the last day of the season. Grays were seeking to extend their league record run of 18 successive victories and fought back from 3-0 down to reach level terms with ten minutes left.

It seemed that the Abbotts, who had played on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, had finally run out of steam, but they found the strength to complete the shock by scoring twice in the last five minutes.

Five wins out of six during April were not enough for Maidstone United to pip Dulwich Hamlet to the Ryman South title, but their record did earn Jay Saunders the Macron Manager of the Month prize.

Their sole defeat was on April 13, when visiting Faversham pulled off a 2-1 victory with a late goal in front of 2,000-plus fans at the Gallagher Stadium.

That was judged to be the Team Performance of the Month, and the announcement comes the day before the fixture is repeated in the play-off final.
