Ryman League South Division

John Maggs made a winning returning to the Ryman League on Bank Holiday Monday by guiding Hastings United to a 3-1 triumph over Ramsgate in Ryman South.

The former Crawley Town, Horsham and Crawley Down Gatwick manager was appointed as the successor to Sean Ray who quit on the eve of the new season just 24 hours earlier.

His new charges didn't get off to the best of starts though, failing to score before the break while Ramsgate took a 1-0 lead thanks to a James Everitt penalty on 43 minutes. But the Arrows certainly responded to Maggs' half-time team talk, Matt Darby on 71 minutes, Matt Maclean on 77 and Kenny Pogue on 82 minutes wrapping up the win in an eleven minute spell.

Hastings are neck at the top of the table with Maggs' former side Crawley Down Gatwick who won 3-1 away at Merstham. Robinson put the Anvils ahead from the penalty spot and wrapped up the scoring four minutes into time added on at the end of the game, his second coming after Rob Carter had contributed an own goal to the visitors' cause on 69 minutes. Merstham's Aaron Rhule grabbed one for the home side on 22 minutes.

Another of Maggs' former clubs, Horsham, also won on Saturday to stay among the leading pack in fifth spot, Jamie Cade scoring their winner at Three Bridges just after the half hour mark.

Ryman newcomers Guernsey struggled again on Saturday, slipping to their third defeat of the campaign at home to Redhill. Gavin Gordon scored the visitors' winner on 57 minutes in front of the division's biggest crowd of the day, 1,215 turning out in the Channel Islands.

Third placed Leatherhead recorded their fourth win of the campaign with a comfortable 3-0 home win over Chipstead. Tom Bradbrook on 41 minutes, Darren Smith from the spot on 67 and Bradbrook again eight minutes before the end ensuring another three point haul.

Eastbourne Town are still propping up the table after they slipped to their fifth defeat in six outings, newcomers Peacehaven & Telscombe continuing their strong start with goals from Jamie Brotherton after 16 minutes and Karl Askhurst in the final minute to record a 2-0 away win.

Sittingbourne, just one place and two points above Eastbourne, also lost again. This time they went down 2-1 at Faversham with Cass scoring twice for the hosts either side of the break. Coyne pulled one back on 67 minutes but it wasn't enough to save them from their fifth reverse of the new season.

Folkestone Invicta, yet to set the division alight, were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Hythe Town, Tee Horst putting them ahead on 71 minutes before Welford equalised on 82 minutes.

Walton & Hersham are still in the top half despite their derby defeat to fourth placed Walton Casuals who won again with a brace from Hudson in the 50th and 70th minutes.

Elsewhere on Monday, Whitstable Town were held to a goalless draw at home to Herne Bay while Worthing drew 1-1 at home to Burgess Hill Town, Lloyd Dawes putting the home side ahead on 27 minutes before Max Miller levelled the game up two minutes before the break.

The day's highest scoreline and most resounding result came at unlikely source, Tooting & Mitcham United finally finding their shooting boots to record a 5-1 home win over Corinthian-Casuals. Nkoma grabbed a hat-trick for the Terrors in the third, 26th and 59th minutes with Pinnock adding a brace on 58 and 87 minutes. Green grabbed a consolation for the visitors owith just over a quarter of an hour to go.
