Bird's boys bounce back in final

By David Watters

Merstham made up for last season's disappointment in the Surrey Senior Cup final on Wednesday night to win the county silverware for a second time after their triumph in 2008.

After losing 2-0 to the Metropolitan Police in last May's final, Hayden Bird, his staff and the Ryman Premier club's players have been congratulated on bouncing back to record a 4-1 win over Combined Counties outfit Godalming Town.

The Moatsiders coasted home at Woking's Kingfield Stadium with three goals before the break from skipper Simon Cooper, Tom Kavanagh and Charlie Penny before the crowd of 560 saw Aaron Hopkinson put the result beyond doubt after the interval.

The cup win comes after Bird's side secured a 10th place finish in the Ryman's top flight and a Moatsiders spokesman said: "Congratulations to Hayden Bird, his management team, all the players and our great supporters too on a fantastic end to a brilliant season!"
