Bostik Supporters Preview 17/18: AFC Hornchurch

It was a case of so near but so far for AFC Hornchurch last season. Andy Dickinson thinks they can make that leap this year.

We asked a supporter from each of our member clubs to answer the same series of questions as part of our preview of the new season. We also asked them to predict how their particular division would finish, from one to 24- and their answers will be revealed in a collection of Supporters Prediction Tables to be released the day before the big kick off.

Here are the answers of Andy Dickinson, representing AFC Hornchurch.

1. What was your favourite moment of last season?

Individually, the 40 yard lob by Leon McKenzie vs Cheshunt that earned us a last minute draw was a great moment. Collectively, the 4-1 defeat of Phoenix Sports stood out. It was a superb performance and gave us great confidence going into the last 2 games of the regular season.

2. And what was the worst moment?

The last 2 games of the regular season. Defeats at Aveley and home to Bowers & Pitsea meant we dropped below Thurrock and relinquished home advantage in the play-offs. Thurrock beat us 1-0 in the semi-final and were worthy winners on the day.

3. How will you do this season?

We've strengthened every department so will be hoping to make a real challenge. But with 2 automatic promotion spots available a lot of clubs will be thinking they'll never get a better chance of going up to the Premier so have strengthened accordingly. It's a very tough division to call.

4. Which matches are you most looking forward to- and why?

For me it's always going somewhere new so looking forward to the away games at Mildenhall Town, Potters Bar Town, Hertford Town and Barking. Plus of course Aveley and their superb new home and Thamesmead Town (at Dartford) who we meet in the FA Trophy.

5. What is your favourite away ground?

I've always liked Ram Meadow (Bury Town) but favourite is probably the Dripping Pan (Lewes). Great place to watch football and their burgers with stilton were awesome. Hope they still do them. Unfortunately since our relegations from the Premier we've both gone our separate ways.

6. Who do you consider your biggest rivals- and why?

Romford and Billericay Town. Romford is more a historical rivalry but it's always good to beat them over the course of the season, though in recent seasons Romford have had the upperhand in terms of results. With Billericay the games always seem to be fiery affairs going back to our Premier and Conference South days.

7. What advice would you give to an away supporter visiting you for the first time?

Get to the club in good time. Car parking is available but limited but once you've arrived head for the bar and bag yourself a free sausage roll or two courtesy of the Supporters' Association. We have a great bar which overlooks the pitch or take your drink onto the open terrace and watch the game from there.

8. Who is your favourite player (for your club) of all time- and why?

There were a lot of very good players prior to my association with the club but for me there was none better than Jonathan Hunt. He was such a cultured footballer, fantastic left foot and could ping the ball 50 yards and drop it onto a sixpence. Scored some cracking goals too.

9. Finally, predict who will fill the top five positions at the end of the forthcoming season:

Cavney Island, AFC Hornchurch, AFC Sudbury, Grays Athletic, Maldon & Tiptree.
