Back in February we published an appeal from Corinthian-Casuals, who were looking to raise funds to take part in the Egri Erbstein Tournament in Budapest. Well the appeal was successful, and on 15th June James Bracken's side kicked off their Semi-Final against Budapesti Atlétikai Klub- and won the match by three goals to nil.
The following day an added-time goal from Harry Ottaway was the only goal of the game as Casuals defeated Testvériség SE, and that result saw Casuals collect the Corinthian Cup- a cup paid for by the original Corinthian side in the early 1900's and donated to the amateur clubs of Hungary to help promote the game.
The match was officiated by Viktor Kassai - 2011 Champions League Final and also World Cup semi-final referee- and Casuals played in an specially-comissioned white shirt, which included the names of the Torino players who died in the Superga air crash. Egri Erbstein was the Hungarian manager of that side, and along with his team tragically lost his life on that mountainside outside Turin.
Casuals fans in Budapest
Casuals took around one hundred supporters and received great coverage in Hungary- and you'll find more of that coverage at home, too- inside today's Non League Paper. The club hope that this event will be the catalyst for a new 'amateur' european tournament in the future.
