Dockers tribute to legendary striker

By David Watters

Tilbury's fans, players and officials are mourning one of the greatest players to wear the Ryman North club's colours.

Striker Ross Livermore, who still holds their record for the most goals in a season for his tally of 54 during the 1958-59 season, passed away on Friday aged 76.

After kicking off his career with The Dockers as an 18-year-old in January 1958, the hot-shot, pictured, spent most of the next decade with the Essex club apart from brief spells with Grays Athletic, Harwich & Parkestone and West Thurrock Athletic.

A member of the side which won four consecutive London League Championships and three London League Cups in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Mr Livermoore amassed a huge total of 290 goals in 305 appearances for the club before finally hanging up his shooting boots in 1968.

Along the way, the forward was also a member of the side which lifted the Essex Senior Cup for the first time in Tilbury’s history as well as winning the Athenian League Division Two Championship, Essex Elizabethan Trophy and the Stanford Charity Cup, all during the 1963-64 campaign.

The Dockers are running a tribute to their late player in their matchday programme for their Ryman North clash with Brightlingsea Regent at Chadfields on Saturday March 26.

Spokesman and Dockers historian Lloyd Brown led the club's tributes this week. He said: "In his career with Tilbury, he scored six goals in a game on one occasion, five in a game twice, four in a game seven times and hit no fewer than 19 hat-tricks.

"These statistics tell the story of just how good and how significant a player Ross was for the club, and I am glad to say I have memories of watching him play over several of those years, one of the most skilled and clever players to wear our colours.

"All at Tilbury Football Club are saddened to hear of Ross’s passing and our condolences and best wishes go to his family at this time."
