Colbran stays put despite cuts

The former Chipstead, Redhill, Worthing and Horsham manager has pledged his future to the Magpies despite seeing a number of players leave the Sports Park this week after the club's committee announced a 50 per cent reduction until the end of the campaign.

The fourth from bottom Magpies host a Sittingbourne side sitting a point and a place below them in the table on Saturday and Colbran, pictured, said: “Eight players have either left the club or are unavailable through injury, but since Tuesday we’ve been working hard to ensure Peacehaven will have a decent side out on the park on Saturday.

"Out of adversity comes opportunity and those players who pull on a Peacehaven shirt can go out and play without fear and enjoy themselves. Our loyal fans will not be expecting miracles and many of our players, especially the younger ones should use this opportunity to their advantage. It’s a great chance for them to establish themselves in a team which plays in a decent standard which in turn will help them in their future football careers.”

In a statement on the club's website, acting chairman Sue Norwood said: “The committee of Peacehaven & Telscombe Football Club has made the difficult decision to cut the playing budget by half for the rest of the season.

“As a committee we have been, and will continue to work extremely hard to ensure that we maintain our status within the Ryman League. This decision was not an easy one to make but in the interest of the football club and grass roots football we have made this very hard decision to reduce the overall wage bill.

“Manager Simon Colbran, who only joined us three months ago, and has been put in a very difficult situation, has advised us, although it will not be easy on this budget, he will work extremely hard with his coaching team, to develop a squad that we as a club will be proud of.

“We truly want to thank Simon for not running away from us immediately in this current climate and we hope that we can return to the level of finance we previously agreed with him as soon as we are in a steady financial position.”
