Hanwell Town commit to become a net zero carbon football club

Hanwell Town FC have committed to becoming a net zero carbon football club by signing up to the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework. This makes them only the second club in London to do
so, with Arsenal having made the same pledge in November.

Marking their commitment, the club have appointed a Chief Sustainability Officer, a first-of-its-kind position in the world of football. Thom Rawson, founder of Sustainable Football, takes on the role on a voluntary basis to assist Hanwell Town in delivering their environmental ambitions.

CEO Nigel Hunt joined Hanwell Town 5 years ago and has already overseen a transformation at the Powerday Stadium, upgrading the changing rooms and pitch irrigation to Premier League standards.
Now the club want to take another step forward, this time in the fight against climate change.

Nigel explained:

“This is a community club with a friendly atmosphere. We’re dedicated to improving both on and off the pitch, and today’s commitment is a testament to that. I’m looking forward to seeing what ideas we can generate, and how we can involve our whole footballing family”.

Thom added:

“I’m proud and excited to take on this unique role with Hanwell Town. This kind of commitment will become the norm across football clubs, regardless of size or stature, and I'm delighted that we’ve taken the first step in our journey to become a net zero football club.”

The UN scheme seeks to unite the global sporting community in action against climate change through it’s five key principles:

1. Undertake systematic efforts to promote greater environmental responsibility
2. Reduce overall climate impact
3. Education for climate action
4. Promote sustainable and responsible consumption
5. Advocate for climate action through communication
