Marlow 150

Marlow celebrate a significant milestone today

Only twenty one football clubs came into existence before our very own Marlow FC, and given that eight of those no longer exist that makes the side from Oak Tree Road the fourteenth oldest football club in the world! Today they celebrate one hundred and fifty years since their formation, which happened in the Compleat Angler Hotel on the banks of the River Thames. The hotel is still there, too!

The club competed in the first ever FA Cup, in 1871-72, and also contributed twenty five pounds towards the trophy. Sadly they were knocked out at Maidenhead, losing one-nil- and the same happened the following year, too. They did go on to reach the Semi-Final of the competition in 1882, losing to Old Etonians at Kennington Oval, and much of their modern-day glory has also come in the Cup, particularly their run to the Third Round in 1992-93, when they lost to Spurs at White Hart Lane. They had another run to the same stage of the competition in 1994-95, when they succumbed to Swindon Town.

They reached the Semi-Final of the Amateur Cup too, back in 1899-1900, losing to Lowestoft Town in a Semi-Final played at Ilford.

Their Alfred Davis Memorial Ground dates from 1928, and their grandstand, pictured above, was built in the 1930's.

We'd like to wish all at the club a very happy birthday- and we'll celebrate by making today Marlow day and repeating two articles we've written about the club in recent years!
