Millers midfielder is running nearly five hundred miles for charity

Lockdown might be limiting our exercise (although we understand that if you live in London, a trip to Stratford for a bike ride is ok) but that hasn't stopped Cray Valley PM midfielder Keiron McCann from moving his limbs, as he will be spending the month of January running four hundred and ninety six miles for charity. Given it's the twelfth, he should be running twelve miles today, but plans to run a colossal thirty one miles on the 31st (to put that into perspective, that's more than the entire Leeds United defence managed when chasing aimlessly after the ball for ninety minutes on Sunday afternoon).

Kieran isn't doing this for fitness, however- although we suspect that extra fitness will be a happy accident. He is instead stretching his limbs in aid of The Darel Bryan Foundation, in support of Brain Tumour Research.

Darel was a friend and neighbour of Kieron, who passed away from a brain tumour four years ago. On his Just Giving page, which has currently raised almost two and a half thousand pounds, Keiron explains:

'Brain Tumours kill more adults and children under the age of 40 then any other cancer. Just 1% of the national spend on cancer research is allocated to this disease.

Darel was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme an extremely aggressive brain tumour in 2014 when he was just 33 years old. Darel bravely fought this cruel disease for 15 months but sadly lost his battle February 26th 2016. Darel was just one of them guys. No matter who you spoke to it would only be nice words they would have to say about him. With your help, I am hoping to raise as much money as possible which will go to raising more awareness for brain tumours and fund some much needed research for this devastating disease.

So here’s the challenge... I have challenged myself with running 1 extra mile everyday for the 31 days in January. For example day 1 is 1 mile, day 2 is 2 miles and so on. By the time day 31 comes I would of ran 465 miles in 30 days. I’m not expecting this to be easy one bit, and have already come to terms with there being lots of rocky patches along the way, however, knowing that I’m raising money for this great cause will help me keep plodding along.'
