FA Cup preview-part four: South Central Division

By Ian Townsend

This weekend our Pitching In Isthmian Premier clubs join the majority of our North, South Central and South East sides in the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup. Here’s the final part of our preview, focusing on our South Central Division entrants.

Tilbury hit seven in the last round, and they travel to face an Ashford Town side who got through after a replay and extra time- but who won five-nil on Bank Holiday Monday. The Dockers haven’t had the start to the season they might have hoped for, but will undoubtedly be up for a cup tie- particularly given how good they were in the last one.

Basingstoke Town have had a fine start to the season, indeed the finest possible start, with a one hundred percent record. They host Bridgewater United, the Western League side currently in ninth place in their Division.

Late goal specialists Bedfont Sports are off to Spelthorne Sports. Undefeated Bedfont, who defeated Herne Bay in the last round, face a side who are in tenth place in the Combined Counties Premier.

Bracknell Town travel to Burgess Hill Town. The Hillians have yet to really get started, losing all three league matches, whilst the Robins are rather ominously beginning to confirm why they are title favourites.

Chertsey Town travel to Erith and Belvedere on Sunday. The Curfews are unbeaten in their three league matches, but have drawn two of them- however they had a convincing four-one win over Lingfield in the last round. Their hosts have had a fine start, winning each of their four league matches so far- and have already knocked Tooting & Mitcham United out of the competition.

Two sides in good form, Phoenix Sport and Chipstead, meet at the Mayplace Ground. Sports won their last tie seven-nil, and followed that up by taking four points from six over the Bank Holiday weekend, whilst the Chips scored three late goals to defeat Faversham Town in the last round and followed that by putting five past Chalfont St Peter and four past South Park in the subsequent two league matches.

Hanwell Town travel to Fleet Town. The Geordies won five-nil in the last round, whilst Fleet, who these days are in the Combined Counties Premier, have had a mixed start to the season but have been very good in the Cup, winning their two ties so far by an aggregate of seven-two.

Marlow travel to Sheppey United. They have a one hundred percent record so far, and haven’t conceded a single goal- whilst scoring eight. Their hosts will pose a stern test, however, as they are currently top of the SCEFL and undefeated, having won five and drawn one of their six matches whilst scoring fourteen goals, conceding seven.

Northwood host Chichester City. City were super in defeating Lancing four-nil in midweek, but that was their first league win- indeed their first league points- of the campaign, although they did defeat Winchester City four-one in the last round. Woods don’t have a league win yet, and have lost their last two- but they did defeat Burnham four-one in a last round replay.

South Park’s reward for their exhausting cup battle with Three Bridges is a trip to Broadfields United of the Spartan South Midlands League. United defeated Reading City in the last round, and have had an up and down campaign so far, the highlights two four-one wins, and the low point a seven-nil defeat.

Sutton Common Rovers travel to Cray Wanderers. Wands have lost their last two matches two-one, whilst Rovers picked up their first point of the season in midweek.

Uxbridge have had a fine start to the season, undefeated so far. They have won each one of their three home matches, and will look to make it four from four as Chesham United come to call. United have won only one of their five Pitching In Southern Premier South fixtures so far this season, and have taken only one point away from home.
