FA Cup weekend: South Central

By Ian Townsend

It's FA Cup First Qualifying Round time. Here's our preview of the ties involving Pitching In isthmian South Central sides.

We’ve all all South-Central tie at the Robert Parker Stadium, as Ashford Town (Middx) welcome Westfield. Field started the campaign with a bang, with thumping wins against Leatherhead and Basingstoke Town, but have gone off the boil a little of late, losing their last two. The Tangerines, however, have been in superb form, with only one defeat from seven matches in all competitions this season, three wins in a row coming into this one, and an FA Cup aggregate score of 13-3. Perhaps Westfield may be buoyed by picking up our Pitching In Performance of the Month award earlier this week? We’re about to find out!

Ashford United welcome South Central side Hanworth Villa to Homelands. The Nuts and Bolts have seen their start to the season hampered by pitch issues, but these are now resolved and they’ll hope to record a first home win of the season against the Villains (note- they’ve only played one home match, and that was a draw!). Their visitors seem to have become draw specialists, with three one-one draws from their four league matches so far, but have recorded two impressive cup wins, over Abbey Rangers and Chertsey Town.

Basingstoke Town won their last FA Cup tie six-nil, but we suspect that Weston Super Mare will provide tougher opponents than Lymington Town. Stoke have been rather enigmatic so far this season, and it’s rather difficult to know what to expect from them- but they’ll need to be at their best. Weston are top of the Pitching In Southern Premier South, undefeated, and have scored twenty two goals from their six matches so far.

Holyport are the hosts for Binfield. The Moles have had a magnificent start to the season, with four wins out of five and only one goal conceded. Holyport play in Combined Counties Premier North, and have drawn all of their league matches so far this season- but they did win in Cup and Vase.

Leatherhead welcome Chichester City in the meeting of two all-green-mean-machines! The Tanners fans would say that their side hasn’t been mean enough this season, with one win and three defeats from their league campaign, but they were quite mean against City’s Sussex rivals Haywards Heath Town in the last round, winning three-nil. City were unbeaten until narrow defeat at Lancing on Monday, and have scored six FA Cup goals to reach this stage, conceding none.

Marlow were on the tv in the last round, but we suspect the BBC won’t be visiting for their all South-Central clash with Uxbridge, more’s the pity. The hosts lost their first match of the season on Monday, whilst the travelling Red Army have also seen their side lose only once. Last season’s league matches saw Uxbridge take four points from six- but prior to that Marlow had won five of the previous six meetings.

Walton & Hersham will be the hosts of our featured match- look for a report at around 5PM on Saturday afternoon- as they welcome Beaconsfield Town. The Swans are on a good run, having won their last four matches- and will want a little revenge after facing the same opponents at this stage last season, Town going through after a replay. Town are currently in mid table in Pitching In Southern Premier South, but have only one defeat from their last five matches.
