A new Assistant Manager for Cheshunt as Hughes heads to Billericay

Cheshunt have announced the appointment of Ugo Udoji as Assistant Manager, after confirming the departure of Mark Hughes to Billericay Town.

Hughes joined the club as captain and led the side to promotion under manager Craig Edwards in 2018-19, making forty five appearances and weighing in with an impressive fourteen goals. He made another twenty eight appearances in a truncated 2019-20, but this season has stuck entirely to coaching. Edwards, speaking to the club website, explained:

"I brought Hughesy in as captain after keeping us up. He was my first target in putting together a promotion side. He didn’t disappoint leading us to victory and promotion on that unforgettable day at Bracknell (pictured above). After Rambo’s departure Mark replaced him and became a valued right hand man as well as a top notch coach. We made a good team and put together a side that would have been in the mix come the end of the season."

Hughes departure left a vacancy which has been quickly filled:

"I have moved quickly to get in a replacement. I compiled a list of 20 but there was one name that stood out and ticked every box. I have so much time for him, he’s an ex player, the boys love him much as do I. He’s a gentleman and a very good coach. He shares my hunger for us to be promoted and will make our dressing room an even more amazing place to be.

Welcome back Ugo Udoji."

As a player, Udoji played for Farnborough, Tonbridge Angels, St Albans City, Bromley, Salisbury City and Harlow Town as well as for the Ambers.

Also departing the club is goalkeeping coach Peter Russell, who has moved on to National League South St Albans City.
