Deepest condolences

We were extremely saddened to hear, yesterday, of the passing of one of our former Isthmian players, Spencer McCall.

Spencer was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer two and a half years ago, and has tackled the disease as if it was an opposition player, with both strength and fortitude. He raised funds for innovative treatment in Latvia, Germany and Mexico, and his last update in May gave us hope, but sadly that hope has been dashed.

Spencer played for Hemel Hempstead Town, Bishop's Stortford, Harrow Borough, Hendon and- chiefly- for Wingate and Finchley.

Aron Sharp. on behalf of the Blues, has written a moving tribute- and we've included it here as it says all that could possibly be said. Our love and condolences to Spencer's family and friends at this devastating time.

'It is with a truly heavy heart that I have to inform all at our club and all of the football community of the passing of our dear friend and former player Spencer McCall.

Spencer joined the club at the age of thirteen and became a very special part not only of our club but also of my family.

Being a truly gifted football player was just a small part of the special person Spencer was. In your life you are lucky to count on one hand individuals that leave a lasting impression on you. To have met someone thirty years your junior who became a close friend as well as part of your family was a special gift.

Spencer was unique in every way. A throwback to a former generation; honest, modest, loyal and full of character. With the heart of a lion he was always someone you wanted by your side.

Kind and compassionate to all and with a highly knowledgeable mind way beyond his years.

Spencer, you fought like the lion we knew you were, no one would have had the tenacity or character to take on the destructive monster inside of your body.

You will leave a huge heart and impression on the football family & the Wingate family.

We are all truly devastated by your passing.

Spencer thank you for allowing us to be part of your life. You will be missed more than you ever know.

Very few can, but my boy …….you will always ‘walk with kings’.

Farewell but not goodbye as your memory will always live on with us, I will make sure of that!'
