Wingate hit back to reach next round

By Peter Butcher

RYMAN League clubs continue to thrive in the FA Cup after the replays last night (Tuesday) saw five more clubs reach the second qualifying round, making an impressive total of 33 survivors out of the 37 possible when Saturday’s games began.

Wingate produced the comeback of the night. They fell behind to a first-minute own goal by Ajet Shehu at Southern League Central high-fliers Royston and conceded again in the ninth minute. Leon Smith pulled one back six minutes after the interval and it was all square on 67 minutes when Anderson Pinto struck. Pinto then put Wingate ahead again in the first period of extra time and, although he was sent off shortly afterwards, the visitors hung on to their 3-2 lead.

Ellis Green gave Dulwich a 21st-minute lead against Southern League visitors Godalming, who replied seven minutes later through Jamie McClurg. That was it until the first minute of extra time, when Calaum Martin put Dulwich ahead again. This time it was only four minutes before Ryan Lake made it 2-2 and that proved to be the end of the scoring.

So to penalties, and three successful kicks were enough for the hosts as Godalming fired their first two efforts over the bar and had their fourth kick saved by Phil Wilson.

Carshalton took 40 minutes to break through against Sussex County League visitors Pagham but then struck twice in quick succession through Harry Harding and Ola Sogbanmu. The Robins had Dawayne Campbell sent off ten minutes tinto the second half but Pagham were unable to grab that lifeline and Lewis Taylor completed a 3-0 home win in the 68th minute.

Two Premier sides enjoyed 3-0 victories over lower-division opponents. Faversham, who had done well to achieve a home draw against Margate on Saturday, were well beaten in the replay. Carl Rook opened the scoring on 13 minutes, Sam Long made it 2-0 on the hour and Tommy Murphy made sure with 11 minutes left.

Hendon had to travel to Potters Bar after conceding a late equaliser at home on Saturday. They made no mistake at the second attempt, despite a battling performance from the hosts. Scott Shulton put Hendon ahead on the half-hour, Dean Cracknell nabbed the second on the hour and Jack Mazzone wrapped it up in added time.

An 89th-minute goal ended Walton & Hersham’s Cup hopes as they went down 1-0 at home to Combined Counties League outfit South Park.
