Fortress Swifts secure as Town become the latest victims

By Ian Townsend

Heybridge Swifts move up to fourth, whilst the Bees and the Yachtsmen play out a stalemate

Heybridge Swifts made it seven home league wins from seven as they negotiated the tricky hurdle of Brentwood Town at Scraley Road. Only National League South side Braintree Town have so far managed to leave Heybridge undefeated in all competitions this season, and the Blues put up a fight but, like many others before them, departed empty handed.

It took the hosts only seven minutes to go ahead, a fabulous header from Darren Phillips at the back post- but the Blues were level at the break, Tom Richardson converting a spot kick just before half time. The hosts were ahead once more on sixty seven minutes, Kieran Jones curling the ball beautifully into the top corner from the edge of the box, and the visitors then handicapped their own chances of getting back into the match when Anthony Furlonge saw red. The game was as good as over when Andy Fennell finished off a Rob Harvey cross to make it three, and Swifts were up to fourth- five points behind the leaders with one game in hand. That’s nine games unbeaten, too.

Basildon United made it two wins from two at the weekend, and started their match against Wroxham with an eight point cushion over their fourth bottom opponents- although the Yachtsmen do have two games in hand. The cushion remains exactly the same after last night’s match, as neither side could score a goal.
