Grays go second with a draw, but score both goals

Athletic and Sudbury cancel each other out at Parkside

Grays Athletic knew that victory over AFC Sudbury last night would close the gap on leaders Canvey Island to two points, but a goal at each end leaves the Gulls four points ahead.

The Yellows, getting back to the day job after their cup endeavours and giving a debut to new signing Laste Dombaxe, struck first- ten minutes before the break- although in truth they had little to do with the goal as Joe Paxman unluckily put the ball into his own net. As often happens in such situations, Joe then picked himself up and got the equaliser, scoring at the correct end eleven minutes after the break to ensure his side got at least something from the match.

Sudbury are sixth, a point off the top five but with two or even three games in hand over the clubs above them. Win the two they have in hand over last night's opponents and they'd replace them in second, but would still be behind Canvey. With four more league matches and a Velocity Trophy tie still to play this month, they've a bit of catching up to do!
