Great Escape complete for the Moles

By Ian Townsend

A remarkable end to the season for Binfield, and wins for champions Chertsey, Marlow, Tanners, Westfield, Vale, Thatcham, Ascot and Ashford

Binfield welcomed Uxbridge knowing that they needed only a point to guarantee survival, a remarkable feat given they were ten points from safety only three weeks previously. A six match unbeaten run of fourteen points from eighteen had overturned that seemingly unmanageable deficit, but they looked to have lost this one, an own goal twenty minutes from time giving Uxbridge the lead. The Moles got their point, however, rather incredibly scoring an equaliser nine minutes into added time, Ethan Lindo starting a party at the Iconic Stadium with a goal that rather sums up their last few weeks.

Chipstead’s match at Southall was abandoned with The All two-nil up and the Chips down to ten men. We await a decision about what happens next, but sadly whatever the outcome the Chips are relegated. Southall had previously confirmed a play off spot, we just wait to find out which one.

Ashford Town also needed only a point to confirm safety, and they travelled to Met Police, heading home with three points, two goals, and enormous relief. Jack Smith got both goals, both of them from the spot, and they gave the Tangerines a two-nil victory.

Second place Marlow welcomed Hanworth Villa to the Alfred Davis Ground, the hosts three points- and nineteen goals- clear of Leatherhead in the battle for second, so aware that it would take something rather unprecedented for them to slip to third! Marlow made it six wins from seven with a first half showing that had the game effectively won by the break, Aaron McLeish-White with two goals, and Josh Boorn with a third in added time. George Wells did respond for the visitors fifteen minutes before the end, but Marlow comfortably hold on to second spot. That’s one hundred and six goals for Marlow this season- only South East runners up Ramsgate can match that.

Leatherhead welcomed Hartley Wintney to Fetcham Grove, and the Tanners comfortably held onto third place with three goals in seventeen minutes. Gus Sow opened the scoring on the half hour, Trey Masikini made it two from the spot just before the break, and two minutes into the second half Ibrahim Olutade’s eighth goal in twelve matches made it three. Another clean sheet, and the joint-best defensive record in the League, with only South East champions Cray Valley PM matching their record of conceding only thirty two goals.

Westfield have been in magnificent form, and had won their last six matches- and they made it seven with a comfortable win over bottom side Corinthian-Casuals. They were two up at half time, Mayowa Adaje and Archy Taylor with the goals, and when Taylor added a third midway through the second half the match was won.

Champions Chertsey Town had already reached one hundred goals- and managed to make it to one hundred points, too- but they had to work hard, coming from behind to defeat Badshot Lea. The Baggies went ahead on nine minutes, Kareem Akinnibi with the opener- but a red card for the scorer on fifty four minutes gave the Curfews a lifeline, and they took it. Gianluca Botti’s thirtieth of the season was the equaliser eleven minutes from time, and he took that tally to thirty one with a winner three minutes from time. One thousand, two hundred and forty four watched the title celebrations- and thanks to Pete Bowers for the photos. The Curfews goal difference of seventy one is the joint best in the league, a record shared with South East champions Cray Valley PM.

Raynes Park Vale have had a fine campaign, and our sixth place side put their failure to reach the play offs behind them as they welcomed Guernsey and came out on top by the odd goal in nine! Jordan Gallagher and Charlie Penny gave them a two goal lead before the Green Lions struck back through Owen Wallbridge, but it was quickly three-one, Jermaine Green with that one, and that was the score at the break. Two minutes into the second half Guernsey added a second, Sam Murray with the goal- and Murray was to score a second half hat trick to take his side up to four, the last of them looking to have sealed a four-all draw, only for Vale to get a winner right at the end, Tom Barnes with it. Gallagher’s twenty eighth of the season had earlier given Vale a four-two lead.

Northwood, in fifteenth, took on the side two places and three points ahead of them, Ascot United, hoping for a win which would see them go ahead of their visitors. They went ahead on nine minutes through Harry McCorkell, but the Yellas were quickly level, Liam Tack with the equaliser. Twenty minutes from time Kofi Anokye-Boadi restored the Woods lead from the spot, but the Yellas turned the game on its head, Taylor Morgan striking on eighty three and eighty six minutes to seal a three-two win.

A goal from William Gutierrez Ramirez gave Thatcham Town victory over Sutton Common Rovers, and the Kingfishers ended the campaign in eighth place, Rovers in fourteenth.
