Guernsey taking a global bow!

By David Watters

Guernsey FC are looking forward to flying the flag for the Ryman League in front of millions of fans around world at the Emirates FA Cup Final.

The Greens Lions - who made history last season when the FA Cup left the mainland for the first time on a matchday to be at Footes Lane for their preliminary round clash with Thamesmead Town - are set be feted before kick-off at Wembley with seven other clubs who made their mark on the world's oldest cup competition this season.

Along with representatives sporting their club colours from Lincoln City, Millwall, Sutton United, Stourbridge, Westfields and finalists Arsenal and Chelsea, Sam Cochrane, the Ryman South club's first ever signing when it was founded in 2011, will be on the hallowed turf belting out the traditional FA Cup Final hymn ‘Abide with Me’ with the backing of a 30 strong choir and The Band of The Royal Logistics Corps!

Cochrane said: "When I was asked to represent Guernsey Football Club at the FA Cup Final I was very shocked, but extremely grateful. To be given this opportunity and to be recognised for my contribution to the club by the board of directors is something I'm very proud of.

"The situation won't really sink in till I'm ready to leave the island and make the trip to Wembley. This is a fantastic opportunity for Guernsey to gain exposure at such an iconic football fixture, which is watched by millions all around the world, and I can't thank everyone enough for asking me to represent the football club and Guernsey."

After their run to the quarter-finals, Non-League's cup kings Lincoln City will also be presented with this season's FA Cup Giant-Killers Award in front of the global audience watching on Saturday.

The FA’s head of pro game relations Andy Ambler said: “It has been a historic season for the Emirates FA Cup and we were keen to pay tribute to a number of clubs at all levels of the football pyramid who provided the watching world with memorable moments. The singing of ‘Abide with Me’ remains one of the iconic moments on Cup Final day and therefore it seemed highly appropriate to bring the clubs into the heart of this tradition.”
