By Peter Butcher

AMBITIOUS Ryman Premier club Margate have signed former Canvey Island winger Alex Rhodes on a one year deal.

The Cambridge-born 30-year-old, who can play as a striker as well as on the left, signed for the Gulls shortly after the start of the 2010/11 season, and went on to make 91 appearances, scoring 21 goals.

Rhodes (pictured courtesy of Gavin Ellis/TGS Photo) started his career as a youngster at Newmarket Town then moved to Brentford in 2003. He went on to play for Swindon Town (loan), Grays Athletic (loan), Bradford City , Rotherham United, Woking (loan), Oxford United, Braintree Town, Grays Athletic and Canvey Island.

Margate chief executive Cliff Egan said: “Alex is a player that our manager Chris Kinnear has had his eye on for a while.

“We’re highly delighted to have signed him. He has plenty of experience in the Ryman League and above.

“And as a goal-scoring left winger, with a good goal to games ratio, I’m sure our supporters will be excited about his signing.”

Alex joins recent signings Sam Long and Tommy Whitnell (both from Cray Wanderers), Craig Holloway (Welling) and John Beales who has re-signed for Gate for another season, at Hartsdown Park. Matt Bodkin, Dean Pooley and Curtis Robins are all halfway through their two-year deals with the Blues.

The club expect to make more announcements about new signings shortly.
