Happy homecoming for new boys

When Ryman League newcomers Greenwich Borough returned home for the first time in nearly a decade their players were so keen to make their big day perfect that they chipped in and got their hands dirty to get the ground ready!

The Borough players even helped out with some weeding and cleaning at Cray Valley's Badgers Sports Ground as last season's Southern Counties East League champions celebrated promotion to the Ryman League by ending an eight-year exile.

Greenwich went down 3-2 to a Millwall XI but last Friday night's result at their new groundshare home at Middle Park Avenue was hardly important on an historic evening for the south east Londoners.

Nearly 750 people turned up to see the homecoming and manager Gary Alexander, pixtrured, wants to put out a team to be proud of when they kick off in the 2016-17 Ryman South campaign next weekend.

The former Lions striker, who has signed hot-shot Charlie MacDonald this summer and has also added former Conference champion Glenn Wilson to his squad, hopes the crowds keep coming after they make their debut next weekend away to Dorking Wanderers.

Alexander told the club's fans: “It was a real team effort. We’ve worked really hard and the players have helped out as well - some have weeded the terraces and painted fences. It’s great.

"Now we can wait for our first league game here. It’s big for the club and we are just happy to be back home. Not having our own ground has held us back so we can now build the community links to move forward in an exciting direction.”
