Howler in eye of the storm!

By David Watters

Rhys Madden and defender Kamarl Duncan will remember Storm Barney for the rest of their lives, let alone their careers, after combining in high winds to gift Romford one of the most bizarre goals in footballing history!

And there's definitely no chance they'll ever be able to forget Tuesday night's howler during their 1-1 draw with grounshare tenants Romford.

With Storm Barney sweeping across Ship Lane webmaster Dawn Hyslop caught the crazy goal on camera and it has since gone viral on the internet and has already been watched by millions on news and sports website around the world!

Fleet stopper Madden won't be able to say he wasn't warned either. Taking a 20th minute goal-kick, he was forced to concede a corner when the ball was caught in the wind and flew straight back at him.

He wasn’t as lucky when Duncan won the ball three minutes later in his own half and tried to clear up-field. Instead, the ball swung back in mid-air and after hurtling back towards him, Madden could only palm it into the net after being caught out by a further wind-assisted bounce!

Thurrock manager Mark Stimson was philosophical about the goal and being sport's most notable victim of Storm Barney which caused havoc across the UK with 70mph winds leaving thousands without power.

Simpson said: "Both sets of players deserve a lot of credit for trying to play in what I thought were conditions that should not have seen the game go ahead.

"At times it was a joke and Romford's goal was something you can only describe after seeing. It was laughable but one our players weren't happy about. It was all about who could do the most with the wind!"
