Is it now a two-way tussle for the title- or can Westfield and the Terrors close the gap?

By Ian Townsend

Hanwell Town and Ware have suddenly opened up a gap at the top- whilst the entire top half of the table still have realistic playoff hopes. Here’s our guide to another weekend of tension and excitement.

It’s tight at the top, with only a point between leaders Hanwell Town and second place Ware- whilst suddenly a gap has opened up between our leading two and the rest, Westfield slipping eight points off the top with Tooting & Mitcham United a point further back.

The Geordies are on the road again tomorrow, and have a tricky match in prospect as they travel to Barking. The Blues are only three points away from fifth place and have only lost two of their last nine games, winning a tough match at Waltham Abbey in midweek; whilst Town are unbeaten in four and seem to have found their stride once more.

Another side unbeaten in four are second place Ware. The Blues looked like losing that record at Harlow Town in midweek but two late goals saw them turn defeat into victory- and they’ll hope to pick up three points at Ashford Town. The Tangerines picked up a morale-boosting win last weekend but then slipped back into their old habits with a four-nil midweek hammering at Chertsey Town, but given they are off the bottom only on goal difference will want to quickly put that behind them.

Third place Westfield are suddenly looking fallible, having lost their last three matches after winning the seven before that. They are on the road again, this time to Chalfont St Peter. The Saints are without a win in eight matches and have only three points from their last twenty four, so will be hoping that Field remain vulnerable.

Tooting and Mitcham United, in fourth place, could catch the top two if they win their three games in hand. The Terrors have a tough task as they host sixth place Chertsey Town, the Curfews having rediscovered their form in winning their last three matches and scoring a total of fourteen goals in the process. The Terrors have lost only three of their last ten, winning six, and on form are very good indeed- but lost two-nil at Bedfont Sports in midweek.

Uxbridge are fifth, a point ahead of the Curfews- but there are only three points between fourth and ninth so we could see dramatic changes this weekend. They travel to Harlow Town, the Hawks reinforced by the return of Alex Read but desperate for victory after only two wins in ten. Their visitors have only two defeats in ten, but have slipped up by drawing three of their last four and losing the other one.

Bracknell Town have climbed ominously up the table in recent weeks, eight matches unbeaten and with six victories during that period. The Robins host a South Park side depleted by transfers and injury of late, and who perhaps consequently have lost their last three matches.

Waltham Abbey will want to get back to winning ways after two consecutive defeats as they travel to Staines Town. The Swans have gone nine matches without a win, and have picked up only six points from their last thirty; form which has seen them stay off the bottom only on goal difference.

Chipstead have been quite magnificent of late. They start the weekend four points off the playoffs and unbeaten since the end of November; indeed they’ve picked up twenty six points from their last thirty. The Chips travel to face the Wolves, FC Romania having seen their form improve to create a two point gap between themselves and the bottom three. That improved form has still seen them win only two of their last ten, however- and each of the others was a defeat.

Another side in improving form are Marlow. They travel to Hertford Town with the joint second best defensive record in the Division, and if they’d been more potent at the other end would surely be much higher- but they have won their last three matches and have only lost two of their last ten. Hertford, in contrast, have only seven points from thirty and start the weekend only five clear of relegation.

Northwood appointed a new boss this week, and the new man faces the challenge of turning around the fortunes of a club who have careered to a run of eight consecutive defeats and fallen to the bottom of the table. The Woods host Bedfont Sports- victors over Tooting in midweek, a result which ended a run of three consecutive defeats. How Northwood would love to see their terrible run end.
