Is it title day for the Millers?

By Ian Townsend

Aveley can clinch promotion today, Felixstowe and Grays battle for the final play off spot, and at the bottom, Barking and Witham fight for survival. It’s our Pitching In Isthmian North preview.

Aveley have had a superb season, and on the odd occasion they’ve slipped up their closest rivals, Canvey Island and Stowmarket Town, have almost always done the same. The Millers, four points ahead with two matches left, welcome local rivals Tilbury to Parkside knowing that victory will clinch their promotion, sealing a return to the top flight a decade after they left it.

Canvey will want to win to as good as guarantee second place and the home advantage that comes with that finish, but they welcome Grays Athletic, who are desperate for three points after losing their play off place to Felixstowe and Walton United at the weekend. The Seasiders are also on the road, travelling to face a Maldon & Tiptree side who can still mathematically finish fifth, but would need two wins, two defeats for the seasiders and Grays, and a massive improvement in their goal difference to do so.

Stowmarket are on the road to Coggeshall Town, the Seed growers with nothing to play for but in decent form despite that. The visitors need three points if they can, because Brentwood Town are but three points behind and you have to expect the Blues to defeat already relegated Romford at the Arena today. Technically, two Brentwood wins and any slips from the two sides above them could see the Blues snatch second place, but given the fact that Canvey and Stowmarket have significantly better goal difference that seems unlikely.

At the other end, Witham Town currently occupy the final relegation place, and welcome mid table Heybridge Swifts today needing three points to have any hope of a reprieve. Above them only on goal difference, Barking will hope to remain in pole position for that reprieve- or at least a relegation play off- as they welcome the side above them, Great Wakering Rovers. Rovers are five points above the Blues, and a draw today should see them entirely safe.

Hullbridge Sports have opened up a six point gap on the bottom three, so it would take some freak results to see them dragged back into the relegation mix. Sports are on the road to Dereham Town, the Magpies still mathematically in with a shout of fifth place, but it would need Grays and Felixstowe to each lose their last two matches and looks extremely unlikely.

Basildon United are also not quite mathematically safe, but with a six point gap and superior goal difference look to have done enough. They host Hashtag United, who have kissed their play off hopes goodbye. Bury Town and AFC Sudbury have nothing to play for apart from bragging rights over each other, and meet at Ram Meadow.
