Isthmian Supporters Predictions 2020-21: Bognor Regis Town (part one)

Ian Guppy takes us to the Nyecamp, and brings us a heartwarming moment that many of us will be able to relate to...

We asked supporters of our Isthmian League clubs to preview the new season, reflect on the old and predict the final outcome. Their predicted 1-20 (or 22) will be worked into a final table which you will see just before the big kick off.

We head to Bognor Regis Town, where Ian Guppy is the first of two Bognor fans to give their view on the forthcoming campaign. You’ll particularly love his answer to question three…

1. How do you feel about the return of football?

I’m excited and also apprehensive that without fans many clubs will struggle to exist., I fully get the #LetFansIn campaign but get frustrated with the comparisons to going on beaches etc. Sadly as most of these clubs have a gate that can be locked, to the Govt, this control makes football (sadly) something that in the economies eyes, isn’t a huge priority as the money into non league doesn’t hugely affect them economy wise. Personally non-league football and any recreation sport is essential for mental health and I can’t wait for the day we get a crowd back at the lane again.

2. The world has changed enormously since you were last able to watch a live football match. Will the pandemic change your approach to watching the game- will you attend as many matches as you used to, and spend as much time at the ground/in the clubhouse, etc?

As the clubs Covid-19 officer it’s been good to see what goes on to get a game on, the work we are doing will make fans safer at games but the onus, essentially, does lie with the public coming to games. If they obey most of the rules and don’t come if unwell we have a huge change to enjoy football pretty much as we did before. I don’t agree with the non shouting and singing directive but the rest of the directives are pretty self explanatory and should not affect the fans enjoyment at all.

3. Last season had many exciting moments before its premature end. What was your favourite moment?

Brad Lethbridge's last minute winning goal to win vs Folkestone Invicta. Was standing with my 5 year old daughter, who for the first time "GOT FOOTBALL", she saw the build up, saw the ball break and saw the goal go in and WENT MENTAL!!!! She ran around with her arms in the air and then jumped into my arms to celebrate. My children been at the Lane since they were born but for the first time I saw her fully comprehend everything that went on in front of her - to me that was a real bucket list moment.

4. And what was your worst moment?

Knowing the season was Null and Void - we were on a good run with a slim chance of play offs and playing good football. I’m gutted for Worthing as they were doing very well and also gutted for Cray as they were flying and we will never know if they'd have pipped Worthing. It didn’t seem likely but we never got to see the exciting finish it was panning out to be.

5. How will you do this season?

The fundraiser blew my mind and will help so much off the field. The new main stand looks stunning (see above, image courtesy of the club and probably taken by Tommy McMillan) and it’s great to see it on the skyline as you drive past the ground. On the field we’ve lost the influential Doug Tuck but kept most of the other players who were part of a good spine.

6. Which matches are you most looking forward to going to- and why?

Any that allow fans in – I’d even enjoy another 3-0 home defeat to Worthing if it means we can get fans watching football. (We’re not sure you really mean that, Ian!)

7. What is your favourite away ground?

Always had a soft spot for Whyteleafe - don’t know why it just brings back good memories. Dulwich would be the best for atmosphere as an away ground and obviously the #ElClassicoast brings out a superb atmosphere.

8. Who do you consider your biggest rivals- and why?

Naturally Worthing- and now the investment at Horsham puts them in good stead too.

9. What advice would you give to any away supporter visiting you for the first time?

Come and say hello in the club shop. We're a really friendly bunch and if there is anything we can do to help make your visit better let us know.

10. Who is your favourite player of all time (for your club)- and why?

Michael Birmingham for me - simply epitomises the whole passion and energy the club runs on.

11. Who will be in the top five at the end of the season?

East Thurrock United, Cray Wanderers, Worthing, Bognor Regis Town, Horsham
