Isthmian Supporters predictions- how well did you do? South Central Division

By Ian Townsend

Just before the start of the season we asked our supporters to predict the outcome of the 2019-20 campaign. We thought- just for fun- we’d see how good you were at it.

One thing is certain, nobody predicted that the 2019-20 season would end as it did. Nor could anyone predict that we’d lose quite so many matches due to foul weather. But back in July last year we did ask you to let us have your thoughts on who would do best- and worst- in the forthcoming campaign, so we thought it would be a shame not to see how you did measured against the final standings we ended up with.

Of course, many clubs will argue that their finishing position was false- and with good reason- so this is anything but a scientific study. But it might be fun nonetheless.

If this website could produce a noise, then at this point it would be the “eh-uh” sound which always accompanied a wrong answer on Family Fortunes. One quick look at the predicted top five demonstrates that, well…see for yourself.

Ware, who were leading the pack when the season shuddered to an end, were predicted to finish in eighth place. Given they were seventeen points above that spot that would only have happened had their form changed in a catastrophic manner! Hanwell Town, who have been pushing the Blues all season, were expected to come in twelfth, so will be delighted to have proved you all wrong! Third place Uxbridge were in the predicted table down in fourteenth, whilst Chertsey Town were five places better than you expected.

Based on last season’s success, you had Bracknell Town as predicted champions- and although they were fourteen points behind Ware they did have four games in hand and were on an eleven match unbeaten run when the curtain prematurely fell, so that wasn’t beyond the realms of possibility. You also had Westfield in sixth, only one place off their final position. Apart from that, however, your top five was something of a road traffic accident. Harlow Town were twelve places away from your predicted second place, Staines Town would have given a great deal to be fourth, when in fact they were holding up the rest, whilst Marlow were mid-table rather than fighting for promotion for a second season in a row.

Tooting and Mitcham United, who you placed third, were five places from that position- although with games in hand might have managed to be there or thereabouts had everything continued as expected. Another positive was that you were absolutely right about Waltham Abbey, who were indeed seventh, and you were very nearly right with your prediction that Barking would be tenth.

Chipstead surprised you by being much better than expected, as did Northwood by being much worse. South Park, who you expected to prop up the rest, will be thumbing their noses at you to celebrate being safely five places better off, whilst you weren’t too far away with many of the others- and you were bang on with the idea that FC Romania would be nineteenth.

We’ll leave you to do the rest of the comparing and contrasting by reproducing your predicted table and the actual table. We’ll do this all again next season- whenever that might be- and we’ll be back with a look at your South East predictions next.
