Isthmian Supporters predictions- how well did you do? South East Division

By Ian Townsend

Just before the start of the season we asked our supporters to predict the outcome of the 2019-20 campaign. We thought- just for fun- we’d see how good you were at it.

One thing is certain, nobody predicted that the 2019-20 season would end as it did. Nor could anyone predict that we’d lose quite so many matches due to foul weather. But back in July last year we did ask you to let us have your thoughts on who would do best- and worst- in the forthcoming campaign, so we thought it would be a shame not to see how you did measured against the final standings we ended up with.

Of course, many clubs will argue that their finishing position was false- and with good reason- so this is anything but a scientific study. But it might be fun nonetheless.

You started well. You got the top two right, just not in the right order- but that can be forgiven, both the Nuts and Bolts and Hastings having fine campaigns. The rest of the top five? Not so much!

Burgess Hill Town would have been delighted with third, given they were fifteenth when the season crashed to an unexpected climax, whilst the Cannons didn’t fire anywhere near as well as you expected, finishing eleventh. Haywards Heath Town had that “difficult second season” feeling, ending the campaign in twelfth place.

Whitehawk were two places better than you expected, but Cray Valley PM will be looking at your predictions and shaking their heads in a superior fashion having finished ten places higher than predicted. Herne Bay will also be feeling rather smug after exceeding your suggestion by six places to finish fifth. Chichester City, who finished sixth rather than fifteenth, will be another club delighted.

One who will be rather less impressed will be Ramsgate. You put the Rams in seventh, and they were eighteenth at full time and- unless they suddenly showed dramatic improvement- unlikely to get much higher given they were eight points behind the side above them.

You were almost right with Whyteleafe and VCD Athletic, exactly right with Sevenoaks Town, and only a place away with your prediction for Three Bridges- although all at Jubilee Field will be glad that the one place was in their favour.

We’ll leave you to do the rest of the comparing and contrasting by reproducing your predicted table and the actual table.
We’ll do this all again next season- whenever that might be.

Thanks for getting involved!

Flashback! Swans, Tanners and Brian We head back to October 2017, when the good folk of Wheatsheaf Park had a dynamic strikeforce and a real chance of promotion. Leatherhead were distracted by their cup exploits.
