Jockeying for position

By Ian Townsend

Our Pitching In North preview is about home advantage and possible relegation play off’s

Here are the knowns. We know that Aveley are the champions. We know that Canvey Island, Stowmarket Town, Brentwood Town and Felixstowe and Walton United will contest the play off’s.
We know that Romford are relegated. We also know that either Barking or Witham Town will go with them.

Now for the unknowns. We expect that Canvey Island will have home play off advantage, but as they are only two points ahead of Stowmarket Town, we don’t know whether they will finish second or third. Stowmarket, then, can either finish second, third or fourth. Brentwood Town can go third and grab themselves home advantage for at least one match, or they might stay fourth. Felixstowe? Well they’ll have to travel to either Canvey or Stowmarket.

Aveley are on the road today to face great escape artists Hullbridge Sports, whilst Canvey are also travelling, not far in their case as they head to the Len Salmon to play Hashtag United.

Stowmarket and Brentwood, intriguingly, play each other- and could be doing the same again in midweek. The Seasiders welcome Coggeshall Town.

At the other end, the battle is for third bottom and the chance of a relegation play off (or perhaps even an FA reprieve). Witham Town are in pole position to give themselves a chance of survival, and they are on the road to bottom side Romford, so must be confident of their chances. Barking travel to Tilbury and must better Witham’s result to get out of the second relegation spot.

We also see AFC Sudbury welcome Basildon United, the Bees now safe for another year, and two sides who’s end of season has fallen flat, Grays Athletic and Maldon & Tiptree facing off at Parkside. Great Wakering Rovers welcome Dereham Town and Heybridge Swifts play host to Bury Town.

And that’s your lot. Promotion play offs are on Tuesday.

Where next?

Play Off intrigue Bedfont and Chertsey will have home advantage- but who will finish second? And it’s either Basingstoke or Uxbridge in the battle for fifth. Here’s our Pitching In Isthmian South Central preview.
It’s tough at the…bottom Whilst we’ve interest in who will play who in the play offs, most of our focus is at the other end, where two- or possibly three- from four will go down. It’s our Pitching In Isthmian Premier preview.
