The Sun, The Daily Mirror and much of the national media say the 35-year-old Gillingham defender is close to signing for manager Craig Edwards and completing a move to the Ryman Premier club's New Lodge in time for his side's trip to Harlow Town on Saturday.
Since taking over in December, Billericay owner Glenn Tamplin, pictured, has brought in a number of big signings. Although he has not officially confirmed a move for Konchesky, the club have been retweeting press reports on his imminent arrival and are set to issue a statement on Thursday on a new signing.
If it is confirmed, Konchesky will be the biggest signing yet of the Tamplin era after costing more than £6 million in transfer fees following moves to West Ham, Fulham and Liverpool.
Tamplin told nonleaguedaily.com: "I think everyone knows the rumours that have been flying around. Would Paul Konchesky fit into that? I think he would and we know he isn't getting a game at Gillingham. Of course we would be interested but we are looking at a number of players to bring in to help us get to where we want to be here."
Tamplin, who signed 20-year-old winger Mekhi McLeod from National League Eastleigh before the Essex club's 2-2 draw at Enfield Town on Tuesday night, has also told fans that he is determined to help Edwards achieve promotion with or without Konchesky.
In a statement confirming the latest addition to his squad, he added: “He [McLeod] will be a very good addition to Craig’s team. We’re building a team that can win the National League South. He will be a part of that.”
