Late drama thwarts Lilywhites

Last gasp Heath goal prevents a vital win for Faversham Town

We had a packed programme scheduled for last night, but we ended up with just the one solitary match, the micro-climate of Haywards Heath Town giving us the only football which escaped the weather. Faversham Town were the visitors, and looked to have won a match which was played in temperatures as low as minus three- but Alex Laing had other ideas.

The visitors, who had taken only one point from their previous twenty seven, are rooted to the bottom of the Pitching In Isthmian South East table- although with so many new arrivals in recent weeks under boss Sammy Moore you have to expect them to be a force once they become a team rather than a hastily assembled band of strangers. For much of last night it looked as if the comeback- and that first win in ten- had finally begun; and perhaps it has, but there are still thirteen points between the Lilywhites and safety. The opening goal arrived on twenty eight minutes and went to Jacques Kpohomouh, the defenders second since following his manager from Premier Division Potters Bar Town last month- and the lead was held until almost the hour mark, when an Alex Laing free kick somehow crept in at the back post.

With four minutes to go and the visitors on top, a penalty gave them what seemed to be a perfect chance for that elusive three points, Bode Anidugbe getting his first Faversham goal on his debut. And yet, it was so near but so far for Faversham, as another Laing free kick right at the end apparently went through the legs of the visiting keeper and into the net, earning the hosts a pint and warming up most of the two hundred and seven who braved the cold.

Heath remain in eleventh place, but open a five point gap between themselves and the bottom four and have seemingly transformed their fortunes, with only one defeat from six.

Heath welcome Three Bridges for a Sussex derby on Saturday, whilst Faversham are also in Sussex, at East Grinstead Town.
