Lawmakers change red card rule

By David Watters

Ryman League players who commit a foul to deny a goal-scoring opportunity will no longer automatically be sent-off under new rules coming into force next season.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) - a body made up of the four British football associations and FIFA which decides on changes to the Laws of the Game - has confirmed that players won't face the previous 'triple-punishment' rule requiring a red card - and therefore a suspension - as well as the award of a penalty whatever the circumstances.

Under the changes ratified by the IFAB on Thursday, players committing accidental fouls to deny goalscoring chances will now be cautioned instead with a penalty awarded.

Deliberate fouls - include holding, pulling or pushing, not playing the ball, serious foul play, violent conduct or deliberate handball in order to deny a goalscoring opportunity - will still incur a red card, subsequent suspension and penalty award.

The long called for move by the IFAB follows a comprehensive, eighteen-month review, led by former Premier League referee David Elleray.
