League lists players among the fallen

Ryman League

The Isthmian League players killed in the First World War are named on Remembrance Sunday as part of the Football Association’s campaign to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the global conflict.

More than 16 million died between 1914-18 and among them were 73 players from the 11 member clubs who constituted the league at the outbreak of war - Clapton, Dulwich Hamlet, Ilford, London Caledonians, Leytonstone, New Crusaders, Nunhead, Oxford City, Shepherd’s Bush, West Norwood and Woking.

Like leagues across the country, the Isthmian paid a heavy toll after suspending competition in September 1914, six weeks after hostilities broke out. London Caledonians, who’d just won the championship for the third season running, and Dulwich Hamlet, were among the clubs who lost the most men in the fighting but every club was hit, some never to recover after a generation was cut down.

When the Isthmian League Council met a month after the armistice in December 1918 to arrange a competition to complete the 1918-19 season, Caledonians and West Norwood were among those who declined to compete. By then, New Crusaders had disbanded and only five clubs - Clapton, Dulwich Hamlet, Ilford, Leytonstone and Nunhead - said they would be able to enter.

The Ryman League’s latter day clubs are to commemorate the centenary of one of the most iconic moments of the First World War - the 1914 Christmas Truce – during the FA’s 'Football Remembers Week' from 5-14 December.

As part of a week of remembrance activity, clubs will help to create a unique photographic record of football one hundred years on by having mixed squad photos taken before kick-off on Saturday 6 December for posting on new commemorative website www.footballremembers.com.

Matches from the Premier League, Football League and throughout the national league systems are taking part to create a record of football in 2014 for future generations.
