Life member's funeral arranged

By David Watters

The Ryman League and representatives from throughout football will bid farewell to former London FA chairman and Isthmian League life member Norman Moss at his funeral service.

The former chairman of Walthamstow Avenue, chairman of Dagenham & Redbridge's Community Trust and FA councillor, pictured, passed away last week aged 93 after a lifetime of service to the game.

A member of the RAF's Bomber Command in the Second World War and the secretary of the RAF Association, his funeral takes place at 1.30pm on Thursday 29 September at the Enfield Crematorium in Great Cambridge Road, Enfield.

Mr Moss's family say mourners can send flowers to 38 Frances Road, Chingford, London E4 9DL. A webpage is also being set-up for donations in his memory to the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Trust, which finances the air ambulance services in both counties. In addition, the funeral directors will also be able to accept donations on the day.

As the secretary of Avenue's supporters club in the 1950s, Mr Moss famously organised more than a 100 coaches in 1953 to ferry fans to Old Trafford for an FA Cup Fifth Round tie with Manchester United.

Elected afterwards to the club's committee, he went on to serve as football secretary and was joint chairman of Redbridge Forest following the 1988 merger of Leytonstone Ilford and Walthamstow Avenue. After the merger with Dagenham in 1992 he was made a life vice-president and chairman of the club's trustees.

Following their promotion to the Football League in 2009, Mr Moss was appointed as the chairman of the Dagenham & Redbridge Community Trust, the club's charitable arm. Fans of the Club Call lines of the 1980s and 90s will also know him as the voice of the Daggers bulletins.

The former FA councillor served on the London Football Association for a number of years, chairing the association and the referee’s committee before being made a life member. A committee member of the Isthmian League for over 30 years, he was made a life member at the turn of the century.
