Mackerel Men restore their five point lead at the top

Worthing defeat their Sussex rivals to extend their Premier Division lead

If you're desperate to bounce back after three consecutive defeats then an away Sussex derby might not be the match you'd choose to have next- but in truth Worthing perhaps had more chance of defeating Lewes at the Dripping Pan than at their own Crucial Environmental Stadium, so dire has the Rooks home form been this season.

The last time Lewes won a home league match was on 23rd October, and that run didn't really look like coming to an end against our league leaders last night, Worthing running out three-one winners. New manager Hugo Langton has already made his mark on the side, and announced three new signings yesterday; but although his Rooks took a hard-fought point from their previous home match against Hornchurch last week, Worthing had lost only one match on their travels and weren't to be defied this time.

The Mackerel Men- smarting from league defeats against Cray Wanderers and Folkestone Invicta and a Cup defeat against Cheshunt- were ahead after twenty two minutes, Connor Hunte, their recent loan signing from Dulwich Hamlet, scoring his first goal for the club. The Rooks did level before the break, Dayshonne Golding with his eleventh of the season, but two goals in two minutes midway through the second half sealed victory. Ricky Aguiar and Jasper Pattenden both found the back of the hosts net, to the delight of the Worthing contingent amongst the seven hundred and thirty two present.

Worthing ended the night five points clear of Invicta and with a slightly better goal difference, but they have played a game more. Lewes are seventeenth, five points clear of the drop zone, and supporters will be hoping that their fortunes improve quickly as they have only one point from their last twenty one. Worthing travel to Kingstonian at the weekend, whilst Lewes host Brightlingsea Regent and will be hopeful of picking up that elusive home victory at last.
