Marketmen lift Charity Shield

By Peter Butcher

THE new holders of the Isthmian Charity Shield are Ryman North club Needham Market, who won on penalties at Bury Town tonight (Tuesday) after a 0-0 draw.

After seven successful penalties, giving the Marketmen a 4-3 lead, Allicion Blake’s kick was saved and Nathan Clarke made no mistake to clinch a 5-3 victory.

With last season’s champions Billericay Town unavailable to take part in the fixture, Needham were chosen to face their local rivals, the League Cup holders, and justified the choice.

Ollie Fenn, Danny Bloomfield, Sam Newson and Kieran Leabon were their other successful penalty-takers.

Needham captain Pip Boyland is pictured receiving the Shield from league vice-chairman Nick Robinson.
