Match of my lifetime: Drew Kendall, Bury Town

By Ian Townsend

We start our new series in February 2017, at Ram Meadow. The Jammers were the visitors, and the leaders.

The match of my lifetime has to be a Isthmian League North Division game which took place in the 2016/17 season.

Bury Town took on Maldon & Tiptree at Ram Meadow on February 25th in a game that swung from side to side. The Jammers were undoubtedly the favourites as they sat at the top of the Division, whilst Town came into the match on the back of six consecutive defeats.

Maldon, perhaps not surprising any of the three hundred and forty who turned up to watch, struck first through an Otley-Gooch own goal on 22 minutes; but Bury soon responded through Regan Pelling two minutes later. A frantic eleven minute first half period which yielded three goals continued as Maldon retook the lead 12 minutes before the break through Akinwande, and it was one-two at half-time.

Bury then brought on Ryan Bannister, and he absolutely tore Maldon's defence to shreds. I can still picture him running all the way through the visiting defence to go on and find the net to scenes of mad joy and to dramatically win the game 3-2 for Bury- after striking a second half brace within the space of five minutes much to the delight to the home support. Town had won for the first time since January 2nd.

Games between the two sides have always been entertaining spectacles for the most part, but that day you had no idea what was going to happen next.

Tell us about the match of your lifetime. Contact Ian on townsendaround@gmail.com- we need around 500 words, although if you can't write that many we can help! Tomorrow we'll be off to Horsham, as Mark Wells takes us back to 2007.
