Midweek round up!

By Ian Townsend

Our midweek football started on Monday and ended on Wednesday, and we still have three one hundred percenters in the Premier Division. Here’s our round up of the action from across the league

Leatherhead went into Monday evening’s fixture at Haringey Borough still smarting from that seven goal thrashing at Bowers on Saturday. Would they fight like a wounded beast or crawl under a rock? Tanners fans would have been delighted that it was the former, as Dan Rowe got the only goal of the game- a goal which gave them their first league win of the season and ended Borough’s unbeaten start.

Bowers welcomed Brightlingsea Regent on Tuesday night, and the last time they did that they also scored seven goals. This time they only got two, but it was enough to ensure that they go into matchday four on top of the league on goal difference. James Thomas and Billy Knott got the goals, and they held on despite Jamie Bennett halving the arrears for Regent.

When Cray Wanderers kick off in the FA Cup on Saturday they’ll be two hundred and eighty two days unbeaten, and their latest milestone was an impressive win at Folkestone Invicta. They fell behind on the quarter hour, David Smith with the goal, but kept their heads, equalised nine minutes later through Joe Taylor, and after the break goals from Charlie Allen and Rhys Murrell-Williamson left them behind Bowers only on goal difference.

Worthing are our other side with three wins from three, and theirs came in a Sussex derby at Lewes. Dayshonne Golding, of course formerly a Rook, scored their first and third goals, with an own goal in between, whilst Jude Arthurs scored for the hosts. Given the Mackerel Men have played all three matches away from home, that’s an impressive start for Adam Hinshelwood’s side.

Bishop’s Stortford appear to have put the travails of last season behind them, and are up to fourth after a four-one win over Enfield Town. Frankie Merrifield hit a hat trick for the Blues, Thomas Richardson got the fourth, and Lyle Della-Verde scored for the Towners but it won’t have been much consolation.

Carshalton Athletic are still unbeaten, and picked up their second win of the league campaign at East Thurrock United- who are still searching for their first point. Nyren Clunis and Omar Koroma gave the Robins a two goal lead, and although Kenny Aileru made things interesting by getting one back with twelve minutes to go the Rocks couldn’t find an equaliser.

Potters Bar Town got their first points of the season with a comfortable three-nil win over Cheshunt. Ben Ward-Cochrane and Nana Kyei gave them a two goal cushion at the break, and Kyei effectively ended the contest three minutes after the restart.

The Ambers are eighth, and Margate sit just behind them after a one-one draw with Hornchurch. Joe Christou gave the Urchins the lead, but Ben Swift drew the Blues level and that was the end of the goal action.

Horsham are still searching for their first victory, but Bognor Regis Town got theirs at the Camping World Community Stadium. Ashton Leigh got the only goal of the game for the Rocks.

Merstham also picked up their first victory, comprehensively defeating Corinthian-Casuals at the Whisky Bible Stadium. EJ Mensah put them ahead before the break, and soon after it Elliott Bolton made it two. Potchu Mendes Calucane made it safe twenty one minutes from time.

Last night Kingstonian looked well on their way to picking up their first win of the season as Ollie Cook and Elliott Buchanan made it two nil, and then they looked to let it slip away as Wingate and Finchley drew level through Kavan Cotter and Suleiman Bakalandwa. And then, in the very last minute, Corrie Andrews- pictured here by Simon Roe- popped up to grab the winner. You can see the rest of Simon’s images HERE.

Into the North Division now, and Tuesday night brought us controversy at Ram Meadow as the referee abandoned the match between Bury Town and Witham Town due to poor visibility. At the time there were only five minutes left to play and the hosts were five-nil up. Once all the evidence has been gathered the board will consider where we go from here.

Felixstowe and Walton United came out on top in a five goal thriller against AFC Sudbury. Shane Temple and Sean Marks made sure that the yellows went into the break ahead despite Ollie Canfer’s reply for the Seasiders, but in the second half Leon Otley Gooch got the equaliser and then in the last minute Josh Kerridge the winner.

Dereham Town picked up their first victory with a narrow win over Cambridge City. Kule Johnson got the only goal of the game.

Soham Town Rangers travelled to Histon and came home with the points. A Toby Andrews double earned them, despite Ed Rolph getting one back for the hosts just after the break.

Last night Romford got their first goal of the season, and their first victory. It was the only goal of the game against Basildon United, and it came to Bagasan Graham.

Marlow were our big South Central winners, defeating Staines Town three-nil on Tuesday night. It was two-nil after only seven minutes, James Clark and Junaid Bell finding the back of the Swans net, and Louis Rogers got the third eight minutes from half time.

Tooting and Mitcham United got two at Ashford Town, and they both came rather late, Jake Rose in the seventy sixth minute and Dontai Stewart four minutes later earning the Terrors all three points.

A spot kick from Devonte Totesaut after ten minutes was enough to earn Northwood victory over FC Romania.
