Millers slip up as North promotion saga takes another twist

By Ian Townsend

Hashtag force themselves back into the play off hunt by inflicting a rare defeat on Aveley

Aveley were eighteen matches unbeaten as Hashtag United arrived at Parkside last night- but the Tags brought that run to an end, and in doing so took themselves to within three points of the top five.

The Tags took the lead on eighteen minutes, in front of a crowd of seven hundred and forty six. Matthew Woolridge sliced his first attempt, but the ball was retrieved by Jermain Francis, passed back to Woolridge, and his second attempt was much better. The lead lasted only three minutes, when George Sykes found the bottom corner for his eighteenth of the season, but despite Millers pressure it was the Tags who scored next- and last- as Sam Bantick assisted Francis to make it two, with eighteen minutes left.

Aveley remain five points clear at the top of the Pitching In Isthmian North Division, so the Millers still have their fate in their own hands, but Canvey Island will close to within two points if they can defeat relegated Romford today, whilst Stowmarket Town will only be a point behind if they win their two games in hand.

Further down the table we have only six points between fourth and ninth, with the Tags in eighth place.

The Millers will face Romford, Tilbury and Hullbridge Sports in their final three matches.

The Tags have Barking, Basildon United and Canvey Island to come.
