Next match is a mega milestone

By David Watters

The fans, players and officials of Ware FC are looking forward to celebrating a massive milestone in the Ryman League club's proud history on Tuesday night.

Founded back in 1892, the Blues are preparing to host Heybridge Swifts in Ryman North in their 5000th recorded first team encounter since in league, cup and friendly outings.

To mark the occasion, the Blues are running a special feature in their matchday programme looking back at their long history since turning out for their first competitive fixture in the Hertfordshire Senior Cup in 1893 under their original name of Ware Town.

Winners of the East Herts League in 1897-98, the Blues went on to win the Herts County League for a second time to earn promotion to the Spartans League in 1922. Successful spells followed in the Delphian League and then Athenian League before they achieved their ambition of joining the Ryman League in 1975, a level of football they've played at ever since including a brief spell in the Southern League at the behest of the FA.

The Blues have lifted their county cup on five occasions, the East Anglian Cup in 1974 and reached the first round proper of the FA Cup twice in 1968 and 2007.

Undefeated at home in the league this season, the Blues will be hoping to celebrate while bouncing back from their 2-0 reverse at the hands of Wingate & Finchley on Saturday in the second qualifying round of the Buildbase FA Trophy.

Tuesday's fixture could also mark a personal milestone for one player. If selected, defender Alaa Oujdi will rack up his 100th appearance for the club after making his 99th in their weekend reverse at Wodson Park.
